As 2024 draws to a close, Japan is poised to take center stage in 2025 by hosting three major global events: the Expo 2025 Osaka in Osaka Prefecture, a hub for innovation and collaboration; the World Athletics Championships, a premier international sporting event; and the TOKYO 2025 DEAFLYMPICS, an inclusive event that celebrates community and sportsmanship.

Arguably the most anticipated event of 2025, the Expo 2025 Osaka presents a unique opportunity for businesses and visitors to gain insight into the latest technologies and network at one of the world’s biggest expos. With an expected 28 million visitors, it is set to go down in history as one of the most-attended expos.

This will be Osaka’s first World Expo since its roaring success in 1970, running from April 13 to October 13, 2025. This time, the expo will take place on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka Bay, setting the stage for international collaboration with over 150 participating countries. The theme, “Designing a Future Society for Our Lives,” invites entrepreneurs to explore innovative solutions to global challenges and enhance the quality of future living.

The expo will prioritize sustainability and technological advancement, focusing on eco-friendly practices such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, and sustainable transportation. Over a thousand companies and startups are expected to showcase cutting-edge technologies in healthcare, AI, robotics, smart cities, and renewable energy. Visitors can immerse themselves in various cultures across multiple pavilions and explore the unique “People’s Living Lab,” where they can directly engage with new technologies and experience first-hand the technologies that will shape our future.

In August, Tokyo will host the World Athletics Championships, bringing together world-class athletes, including Olympic champions, for one of the year’s largest sporting events. Organized by World Athletics, the Championships will be held in Japan’s capital, using state-of-the-art facilities such as JAPAN NATIONAL STADIUM, originally built for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Spectators will witness incredible athletic feats in track and field events, from sprints and marathons to high jumps and pole vaults. Athletes from 200 countries are expected to compete, making this a truly global showcase of athleticism.

The TOKYO 2025 DEAFLYMPICS: Supporting Inclusion in Sports

At the TOKYO 2025 DEAFLYMPICS, a flash lamp is used to visually signal the start of a match.

Later in the year, from November 15 to 26, Japan will host the TOKYO 2025 DEAFLYMPICS, the international Olympics for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, in Tokyo, Shizuoka, and Fukushima.

The TOKYO 2025 DEAFLYMPICS is specifically designed for deaf athletes, so players must rely on visual communication methods.

Held every four years, the TOKYO 2025 DEAFLYMPICS promotes athletic excellence and participation while fostering a sense of community and empowerment for the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. This will be the first time Japan hosts the DEAFLYMPICS.

Whether you travel to Japan on business or for pleasure, be sure to check out what events are on and make the most of your travels.
